1 Corinthians 1:18-31
UNITY through Christ comes by the WISDOM of Christ to those CHOSEN in Christ
For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. (1 Corinthians 1:21)
The Bible tells us that we are spiritually “dead.“ Ephesians chapter 2 puts it this way.
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, (Ephesians 2:1-2a)
What this basically means, is that we’re not only separated from God spiritually, but that we’re also uninterested in God naturally. Paul addresses this reality of our being “dead“ later on again in Ephesians chapter 4.
They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. (Ephesians 4:18)
So what the Bible is saying here, is that our sin has cut us off from the “supernatural” God and limited us to the “natural” creation. This “darkened“ condition therefore, has made it impossible for human beings to know God through natural or “worldly wisdom”, because we’re cut off and “alienated” from him.
If all of this is true, and it is, how then can anyone come to know God and be saved? Well, according to the apostle Paul here, that’s the point and purpose of “preaching.“ Despite the “natural“ limitations of people, and the “silliness“ of the gospel. God’s Spirit uses the truth of Scripture to awaken souls to the “supernatural“ and regenerate our spirits with life eternal.
he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, (Titus 3:5)
The take away for us church is the plain fact that nobody is saved apart from somebody “preaching.” Ask God to increase your love for the lost, and your
boldness to witness. And then watch God accomplish his purpose through your faithfulness to rescue the “captives.”
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, (Luke 4:18)
