1 Corinthians 1:18-31
UNITY through Christ comes by the WISDOM of Christ to those CHOSEN in Christ
But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, (1 Corinthians 1:27-28)
Do you remember what it was like as a kid to take part in group or team activities? Like when everyone was standing in a group, and the leaders were picking who they wanted on their team. If you were ever in this situation, you know how great it felt to hear your name called! But if you’ve been in this situation, you’ve also witnessed, or maybe even experienced, how awful it was to not be “chosen.”
What makes this situation even more interesting, is that Paul says the people God “chooses” for his team, are the ones that probably wouldn’t have made “the cut” when we were kids. God’s “picks” are the ones that normally didn’t get to play because they were “foolish, weak, low and despised.”
I realize many of us don’t view ourselves as belonging to the group that was on the “outside.”But the reality of the Christian faith, is that it is primarily made up of ordinary, regular people like Paul said.
For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. (1 Corinthians 1:26)
I would encourage you to regularly take time to consider, how amazing it is that God chose you out of all the people on the earth to be his special possession! And then out of love and appreciation, live to serve the one who was “rejected”, so that you could be “chosen.”
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:4-5)
